Water softeners
In many applications it is, for technical purposes,
recommended to lead water trough a water softener. The applications can
be:
- Steam boilers;
- Feed water for reverse osmosis;
- Technical water for engine room purposes.
On board of most ships there is a dedicated water production; this water is suitable for all of the above mentioned purposes, but in many ports water will be supplied from shore, and in many occasions this water is of a very bad quality. The use of a water softener in these circumstances is necessary to save the expensive equipment, pipe lines, and to save costs in use of chemicals.
How does the VOS | Evatec Marine Water Softener work?
Water softeners consist out of one, two or more cylinders filled with ion exchange resin. This resin contains Na+ ions which will be replaced by Ca2+ or Mg2+ for each two worthy ion which disappears from the water, two natrium ions will return. If the Na+ ions have been replaced the resin will be regenerated.
This regeneration process happens automatically by a
NaCl (kitchen salt) solution which will flow trough the resin. With this
process the resin will be loaded with natrium ions Na+ en will be ready
for use. By using two or more cylinders in our Water Softening System,
minimum one cylinder will be ready for use while other cylinders are regenerating.
